Welcome to the 1st Newsletter of 2016 from www.calligraphity.com

Dear all,

This is quite a short Newsletter this month

Best regards, Charlie

Top news

At last! The new 2015 edition of the 2006 exhibition catalogue The Painted Letters of Adolf Bernd is now, at long last, available and I managed to fulfil almost all of the pre-orders that I received just before Christmas. I have written to all of those that had pre-ordered but there seems to be some of you out there that my e-mail has not got through to them as I have about six copies that I still waiting for their new owners to confirm that they still want a copy. This maybe because they have changed their e-mail address and are therefore my mails are not getting through to them. Please spread the word if you know of anyone who is looking for a copy.

If you missed getting a copy of this book the first time, then you now have a second opportunity. Click here to learn more about this book.

Sheila Waters’ stunning book, Foundations of Calligraphy is in stock and ready for shipment.  Based on a series of articles by Sheila Waters that had previously been published in Letter Arts Review between 1995 and 2000, the information in this book is still as relevant today as they were when written.

Illuminate your calligraphy and brighten up the lives of others:

Patricia Lovett has recently released a new book titled “Illumination GOLD and Colour: Tools, Materials, Techniques, Projects.” The book can be used either stand-alone or as a complement to her latest DVD with a similar title of “Illumination: Tools, Materials, Techniques, Projects.” That runs for over 3 hours.

These can be purchased individually by clicking on the links provided above, or you can purchase both items at a special discounted rate by clicking here.

Contemporary Calligraphy by Jilly Hazeldine

In this stunning book, Jilly describes in detail and demonstrates clearly through the many accompanying diagrams how to write formal scripts well and then adapt and vary them to enhance and interpret texts.

The book begins with a historical overview of letters from the Trajan inscription of 110 AD to the Renaissance. There is a comprehensive section on tools and materials and how to begin. Then the focus is on good writing of six major scripts based on historical models, moving on to show how each script can be adapted through weight and form change, pen manipulation and pressure change to make it a lively and contemporary form. Design, layout, use of colour and information on paper are included, along with the use of alternative tools, the pencil and the pointed brush, to draw and paint letters.

The book is a comprehensive and practical manual for both the beginner and the more experienced student who wants to take calligraphy to another level.

This book would be a great asset for beginners and intermediate calligraphers alike. It is very well written and very well illustrated. Highly recommended.

Cover to Cover – 20th Anniversary Edition by Shereen LaPlantz

I was so pleased to learn that this new edition of Shereen LaPlantz classic book Cover to Cover was being released – and it is hard to believe that it was 20 years ago when this inspiring book was first released! The book covers Bookbinding Basics, Pamphlets, Basic Codex, Variations on Codex Bindings, Stab Bindings, Fold Books, Combination Books, Unusual Bindings and tips about how to present your books. This is a must for anyone interested in creating contemporary books or displaying their work in a book format.

Complete Guide to Calligraphy by Vivien Lunniss

This is a really well written and well-illustrated book and ideal for beginners and others that are keen to learn a new hand or two. The description for each script begins with some relevant history and the instructions for each letter, including nib-width height and pen angle, are colour-coded to clearly show the order of the strokes. The book has relevant examples of the scripts in use.

There are historical contributions from other fine calligraphers like Jilly Hazeldine, Mary Noble, Veiko Kespersaks, and Brian Colin. There is a ‘gallery’ of pieces scattered through the book with contributions from Gaynor Goffe, Anne Jamieson, Michael Orriss, Rosella Garavaglia, Sue Gunn, Jan Pickett, Luca Barcellona, Birgit Nass, Anna Pinto, Barbara Alldred, Kirsten Burke, Yukiko Fukaya, Jilly Hazeldine, Janice McClelland, Anja Lehtinen, John Stevens, Susie Leiper, Tony Curtis, Sue Goldstone and Sasan Nasernia.

Marvellous!!

About the Society of Scribes and Illuminators.

The aim of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators is to bring the beauty of handwritten words and letters to the world. We do this by holding exhibitions, showing up-to-date work by the masters of calligraphy – our Fellows and our most experienced Lay Members. We hold several meetings a year showing work and talking about it in less formal settings: Lay Members’ Day, Research & Technical Day and the Annual General Meeting. Each year we issue two copies of The Scribe, our well-known journal, and four newsletters by email.

The SSI was founded in 1921 in the UK by early students of Edward Johnston with the aim of advancing the crafts of writing and illumination. Today it is the international focus for professional calligraphers and enthusiastic amateurs, drawing its membership from the United Kingdom, Ireland, continental Europe, the USA and Canada, Australia and New Zealand, South Africa and the Far East.

Membership of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators

Membership of the SSI is available to all interested calligraphers, regardless of your level of experience or what part of the world you are living in. The benefits of joining are enormous and will help you develop your calligraphic skill.
